Zusammenfassung
  • In meiner Dissertation biete ich eine neue kritische Ausgabe von Lorenzo Vallas (1406-1457) 'De libero arbitrio' (1438), dem einzigen humanistischen Dialog über das Problem des freien Willens ('liberum arbitrium'), zusammen mit einem Kommentar, einer neuen Übersetzung und einer literarischen und philosophischen Studie. Die PROLEGOMENA beschreiben die erhaltenen Handschriften und Druckausgaben, rekonstruieren die genealogischen Beziehungen zwischen ihnen auf der Grundlage einer gründlichen Kollation aller Textzeugen und analysieren die Überlieferungsgeschichte des Dialogs im Kontext des frühen deutschen Humanismus und Vorprotestantismus. Auf der Grundlage der ersten vollständigen Neufassung der Überlieferung bietet meine EDITION einen im Vergleich zu Anfossi 1934 und Chomarat 1983 erheblich verbesserten Text, kritischen Apparat und Quellenapparat; ihr folgt eine neue ÜBERSETZUNG. Die STUDIE enthält eine stilistischen und literarischen Analyse des Dialogs und untersucht dann die von Valla entwickelten philosophischen und theologischen Argumente in Bezug auf die antike und mittelalterliche Debatte über den freien Willen ('liberum arbitrium') und den Status auf die Zukunft bezogener kontingenter Aussagen ('futura contingentia'). In meinem KOMMENTAR untersuche ich detailliert Struktur und Inhalt des Dialogs, Vallas Gedankengang, seine Latinität, antike Quellen und intertextuelle Phänomene.
Abstract
  • In my dissertation, I offer a new critical edition of Lorenzo Valla’s (1406-1457) 'De libero arbitrio' (1438), the only humanist dialogue on the problem of free will, accompanied by a commentary, a new translation and a literary and philosophical study. The PROLEGOMENA describe the extant manuscripts and printed editions, reconstruct the affiliations between them based on a thorough collation of all textual witnesses and analyse the 'Überlieferungsgeschichte' of the dialogue in the context of early German Humanism and pre-Protestantism. Based on this first full recension of the transmission, my EDITION offers a vastly improved text, critical apparatus and apparatus of sources compared to Anfossi 1934 and Chomarat 1983; it is followed by a new TRANSLATION. The STUDY is concerned with a stylistic and literary analysis, then examines Valla’s philosophical and theological arguments in relation to the ancient and medieval debate on free will ('liberum arbitrium') and future contingents ('futura contingentia'). In my COMMENTARY, I examine in detail the structure and content of the dialogue, Valla’s train of thought, his Latinity, ancient sources and intertextual phenomena.
