Dear Sir: – –

The Directors of the World’s Columbian Exposition[1] have decided to hold in connection with the material exhibit at Chicago a series of Congresses illustrative of the moral, intellectual, and religious condition and progress of mankind. There will be a Social Congress, a Religious Congress, an Educational Congress, a Philosophical Congress, etc.[c]

The undersigned has been appointed chairman of the Executive Committee of the Philosophical Congress. It is the intention of the Managers to invite the leading philosophical thinkers and writers of the world to be present and to read papers on philosophical subjects and to join in discussions. I have much pleasure in inviting you to be present and to read a paper; or, if you cannot be present, at least to send a paper. Any subject in which you may be interested will be appropriate. All papers read will afterwards be printed in the proceedings of the Congress[2].

While the Committee has no means to defray the travelling expenses of those who take part in the Congress, it is able to offer free entertainment during the continuance of the Congress at Chicago, which will be held sometime during the last two weeks of August.
